A Majestic Giant

Poecilia velifera, commonly known as the Sailfin Molly, is one of the most impressive livebearing tooth carps. It is a large species that requires a significant amount of space to truly thrive. Unfortunately, they are often kept in community tanks that are too small, preventing them from developing to their full potential.

The species gets its name from the male's spectacular dorsal fin, which can reach 70-80 mm in length and up to 60 mm in height. Patience is required, however, as the fin and the fish's full body size are not fully achieved until around two years of age. When the male is thriving, he will frequently raise his dorsal fin in a magnificent display to entice females or challenge rivals.

Natural Habitat and Water Parameters

Native to Central America and Mexico, they often inhabit coastal regions, meaning they thrive exceptionally well in brackish water setups. In the aquarium, high temperatures of around 27-28°C are essential, and a moderate addition of salt is highly recommended to maintain their health.

Diet and Care

In addition to warm water, Sailfin Mollies require a diet rich in vegetable matter. They should be fed spirulina-based dried foods, herbivore pellets, or occasionally blanched lettuce leaves to mimic their natural grazing on algae.

Breeding

Compared to other livebearers, Poecilia velifera is not the easiest species to breed successfully. The gestation period lasts between 5 and 8 weeks. While a typical brood consists of 40-80 fry, exceptionally large females can reportedly produce up to 200 fry in a single brood. The primary challenge is raising the fry; achieving a size of quality requires large tanks, high temperatures, and intensive feeding.
