A World of Life: Livebearing Tooth Carps
Livebearing tooth carps, or Poeciliidae, are undoubtedly the backbone of the modern aquarium hobby. As an aquarist, there is something truly unique about seeing the first fry swimming freely in the tank immediately after birth. This group includes popular species such as Guppies (*Poecilia reticulata*), Mollies (*Poecilia sphenops*), Swordtails (*Xiphophorus hellerii*), and Platies (*Xiphophorus maculatus*).
Natural Habitat and Water Parameters
Most species originate from Central and South America, as well as the southern parts of North America. They are found in everything from fast-flowing rivers to stagnant brackish waters. In the aquarium, they generally prefer hard water with a pH between 7.0 and 8.5. Temperatures should remain stable around 22–28°C. For species like Mollies, a small amount of aquarium salt can often be beneficial to mimic their natural coastal habitats.
Behavior and Social Interaction
These fish are known for their lively and curious nature. They are highly social and should be kept in groups. A vital rule of thumb for aquarists is to keep multiple females per male (ideally 2-3 females per male). This is due to the males' constant mating drive, which can overstress a single female. They are generally peaceful and work excellently in community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
Feeding and Care
Poeciliidae are omnivorous but require a significant amount of plant-based food. In nature, they constantly graze on algae growing on rocks and driftwood. In the aquarium, they should be offered a varied diet of flake food, small frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia, and spirulina-based foods to ensure optimal coloration and health.
Breeding: Nature's Wonder
The most fascinating aspect of these fish is their reproduction. Males are equipped with a gonopodium (a modified anal fin) used for internal fertilization. After a gestation period of approximately 28 days, the female gives birth to fully developed fry. To ensure fry survival, plenty of fine-leaved plants like Java moss or Hornwort are essential, as the adults may otherwise prey on the offspring.
