The White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) was named after the Chinese scout leader, Tan, who discovered the species in 1932 at the foot of White Cloud Mountain near Guangzhou. It is often referred to as the 'Poor Man's Neon,' a nickname from an era when tropical Neon Tetras were expensive and difficult to breed, whereas White Clouds are exceptionally easy to propagate.
In the Aquarium
This is a distinctly cold-water (subtropical) fish, thriving best at temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius. Keeping them at standard tropical temperatures (25+°C) significantly shortens their lifespan and causes their colors to fade. While they are not demanding regarding water parameters or diet, they should always be kept in a school of at least 6-8 individuals to display natural behavior. Regular water changes and a varied diet of flakes and frozen foods ensure optimal health and coloration.
Breeding
White Clouds are ideal for breeding projects, even in small tanks down to 12-20 liters. They rarely require special preparations to begin spawning. Although many sources claim that parents do not prey on their own offspring, practical experience often proves otherwise. To ensure the survival of the fry, parents should be removed after spawning, or the tank should be heavily planted with mosses like Java moss.
Status
For a period, the species was believed to be extinct in the wild due to pollution and tourism at its type locality. However, isolated populations have since been rediscovered in both China and Vietnam.
