A Vibrant Rock Dweller
Otopharynx lithobates (often known as 'Zimbabwe Rock') is undoubtedly one of the most stunning cichlids from Lake Malawi. As an aquarist, it is a true pleasure to watch the male color up, displaying brilliant blue hues with striking markings. It is a fascinating process to observe the male when he is in a breeding mood, eagerly chasing the female through the tank to entice her into spawning.
Behavior and Tank Mates
Lithobates is a reasonably peaceful fish for a Malawi cichlid. It works very well with other peaceful species such as Sciaenochromis fryeri (Ahli) or Aulonocara species. However, one should be aware that the male can be quite persistent with the female when he wants to mate, so an aquarium with good hiding spots is required.
Breeding
As a mouthbrooder, this species requires patience. My own experiences show that it may take several attempts before succeeding; females often swallow the eggs the first few times. The female is significantly smaller than the male and has a discreet brownish color with 3-4 black spots along her side, helping her stay hidden among the rocks.
