This mbuna from Lake Malawi is famous for the males' distinctive orange forehead and dorsal fin, hence the common name "Orange Cap". In the wild, they are primarily found around Ndumbi Rocks and Likoma Island.

In the home aquarium, this species is relatively peaceful compared to many other mbunas. However, males remain territorial and require sufficient hiding spots to feel secure. Females display more neutral coloration and tend to be less active in the tank hierarchy. They are maternal mouthbrooders and thrive best in a harem setup with one male to several females. Like most mbunas, they are primarily herbivores and should be fed a diet high in vegetable matter.
