A Pearl from Lake Malawi
Labidochromis sp. "perlmutt" is one of the most elegant and peaceful mbuna cichlids from Lake Malawi. The name "perlmutt" refers to its beautiful, pearlescent body color, complemented by its characteristic yellow fins. While not the most vibrantly colored mbuna, it possesses an understated beauty that makes it a popular choice for many aquarists.
Behavior and Social Interaction
Unlike many of its more aggressive relatives, the Perlmutt is known for its mild temperament. I have personally not observed any signs of aggressive behavior toward other tank mates, making it an excellent candidate for a community tank with other peaceful mbuna species. They are easy to keep and do not require the same extreme precautions against aggression often seen with other cichlids.
Breeding and Grow-out
As a mouthbrooder, it is relatively easy to breed. My own fish spawned shortly after purchase and quickly produced results. The fry are not difficult to raise; they are eager eaters, accept most foods, and grow steadily. However, it is important to ensure there are enough hiding spots in the aquarium so the small fry are not picked off by other adult inhabitants.
Feeding and Care
A varied diet is essential, but one should avoid "heavy" foods. A diet based on vegetable matter and spirulina is ideal for keeping the fish healthy and their colors clear. Although robust, they thrive best in an aquarium with good filtration and regular water changes.
